Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan
Hey everybody, I will be documenting this evening's Ward 10 meeting at the Goodyear Branch Library with #AKRDocumenters and @SignalAkron

09:42 AM Jun 21, 2024 CDT

Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 2/15
The meeting started at 6:09 PM
Sharon Connor led an optional pledge of allegiance
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 3/15
Casey Shevlen (Director or Sustainability and Resiliency) presented a plan to relocate the Middlebury waste transfer station (WTS) to 1400 Archwood Ave
A WTS is a midpoint for waste to be stored before being transported to a further final point such as a land fill
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 4/15
She said the 25-year contract with Waste Management (WM) has ended and the city has a new 3-year agreement which requires a WM to build a new WTS by November 2025
She said the new site must be approved by the City Planning Commission on July 12th and City Council.
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 5/15
She said the northern part of the new site is less then 400 feet from a residential area in East Akron
She said the site was chosen because of low land costs, distance from residents, and proximity to the highway
HERE ARE THE UPCOMING COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 6/15
A community member said the nearby neighborhood will receive no benefits and that pollution and noise will decrease property values
Shevlen said community members should attend WM's tours of their modern WTS facilities and said new facilities emit less odor
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 7/15
Multiple residents said they are concerned about runoff and pollution into nearby Waterways
Chris Ludle (Service Director) said there will be a separate storm water system for the WTS that will direct water directly to filtration facilities and away from local waterways
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 8/15
He said WM is investing over a billion nationally to become more environmentally sustainable and the Akron facility will be contained indoors to reduce pollution and odor
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 9/15
Jessica Goldbourn from Habitat for Humanity said Ward 19 now encompasses the Dan Street sitw where they are building 16 new homes.
She said they are building a 25-30k SQ FT park and asked residents to join the park planning committee to begin construction in 2025
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 10/15
A community engagement Akron Police Officer said there is a coffee with a cop at Artisan Coffee from 8-10 AM this Saturday, June 21st, 2024
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 11/15
Connor said Johnnie Hannah (Ward 5) led a letter sent to the mayor saying that he and other members of council have safety concerns with Akron Juneteenth events. She said the mayor cancelled all events over the weekend including Water Tower Market in Goodyear
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 12/15
Connor said city council has passed money to rebuild the Kent Street bridge in East Akron
She said the Mayors Office, Akron Victims Assistance, and other donors have organized and donated to a new gun violence assistance to help gun violence victims

She said Project Shine is cleaning 20 seniors' homes
She said fencing has been constructed around Reservoir Park community center and demolition of the addition will begin soon
Wittman Sullivan @WittmanSullivan 15/15
A librarian said there is a Lego club on Thursdays, Outback Ray will be at the Goodyear library at 1 pm on June 26, and July 9 there is a zen tagle class.
