County staff shared a presentation with the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners that outlines a portion of their plans for implementing Zero Waste in response to a resolution that will close the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center between the dates of 2028-2040. A full report on the transition plan will be released to the commissioners on Feb. 1.

County staff has identified the need to work with state, county and city leadership on a multi-year campaign to pass legislative priorities that they have identified as necessary to implement Zero Waste. All 45 cities will need to revise their municipal waste ordinances.

The county has named the Minneapolis Pollution Control Agency as a key partner in shaping legislative priorities and enforcing the laws once they are passed.

Of the 22 legislative priorities that the county has proposed, 4 of them will be introduced in the 2024 legislative session.
